Summing Up 2024 Spring and Summer at the Lake

The seasons passed by too quickly. Spring and summer are my favorite seasons in Virginia. Hummingbirds were late to arrive this year, but as you can see from the photo above they did arrive. We only have one species that visits our feeder, the Ruby-throated hummingbird. It is the only one known to breed in the state. My wife is quite fond of the colorful little birds and she starts trying to attract them in early April, but this year there weren’t very many until the end of May. The one in the photo is a female. Only the males have the ruby iridescent throat patch

It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows but we had a fair amount of both. My wife had plenty of opportunities to kayak, I grew and gave away plenty of tomatoes and we both experienced many exceptional sunsets and even a few sunrises. Of course the sun rose every morning, but I was seldom up to see it. We especially enjoyed entertaining guests and welcoming grandchildren. I played a lot of golf (though I am not good) and thanks to terrific teammates, I was part of the team that won the Men’s Opening Day tournament at the local club.
